Start with the workload and complete model number
Choose the job first: household backup, photo library, surveillance, media, virtual machines, office file sharing or a higher-availability business workload. Then record the complete model number and revision. Bay count alone does not establish processor capability, memory ceiling, network speed, expansion support or application performance.
- Estimate usable capacity with the intended RAID or Synology Hybrid RAID layout, drive count and future growth.
- Check maximum supported memory, module layout and whether memory is replaceable or expandable.
- Confirm Ethernet speed, optional network-card support and the switches and cabling needed to use it.
- Check supported expansion units, M.2 roles, PCIe slots, USB devices and surveillance-camera requirements.
Use Synology’s compatibility list for the exact NAS
Synology maintains model-specific compatibility records for drives, memory, network cards, expansion units and other accessories. Search the exact NAS model and component model before payment. A drive that physically fits is not automatically validated for every DiskStation or RackStation, and a component supported on one generation may not be supported on another.
Record the drive manufacturer, complete part number, capacity and firmware. For arrays, use drives intended for NAS or enterprise workloads where the manufacturer and Synology guidance support the use case. Keep an independent backup: RAID improves availability but does not protect against deletion, malware, theft, fire or a failed enclosure.
Check memory, network and expansion details
- Memory: match the official supported type, capacity, ECC requirement and slot layout. Generic modules can fit electrically without being validated.
- Networking: confirm the NAS, adapter, switch and cabling all support the intended 2.5, 5, 10 or faster Gigabit Ethernet path.
- M.2 SSDs: check supported models, sizes and whether the slots are approved for cache, storage pools or both.
- Expansion units: match the exact enclosure and cable to the NAS model. Do not assume a newer expansion unit supports an older NAS.
Power and Malaysia setup
Read the exact product specification and power-adapter label. Many desktop NAS models use an external adapter with a broad input range, while larger systems can have internal power supplies, but the exact model controls. Malaysia uses 230 V, 50 Hz power and Type G plugs. A plug adapter changes only the plug shape; it does not convert voltage.
Use a surge protector or suitable UPS and confirm Synology DSM supports the selected UPS connection. Allow ventilation around the chassis and use drives rated for the operating temperature and workload. Protect the NAS from Malaysia’s heat, humidity, dust and unstable power.
Plan drives and shipping separately
An empty NAS enclosure and a fully populated NAS have different weight, shock and value. If drives are bought separately, keep each drive in rigid anti-static protection. If a NAS arrives with drives installed, check the manufacturer’s transport guidance; heavy drives can stress trays and connectors during a long shipment. Preserve the original foam, box, drive trays, screws, keys, power adapter and cables.
Warranty can depend on where the product was bought
Synology’s current limited warranty says support is not available in every country and may be refused outside the country where the product was originally purchased. Coverage is for the original purchaser through Synology, an authorized distributor or reseller, or the Synology Store, and proof of purchase matters. A US purchase should not be assumed to receive Malaysian warranty routing.
Before payment, confirm the seller, product support status, warranty period, return address and whether international return freight, customs clearance or other charges could apply. Back up data and remove non-preinstalled drives, memory or cards before a warranty return when instructed; warranty service is not data recovery.
