Performance depends on the complete connection
Advertised speed can be limited by the drive interface, controller, port, cable, enclosure, firmware, thermals, operating system and workload. A PCIe Gen4 SSD can operate at a lower speed in an older slot. Usable capacity also differs from the decimal capacity printed on storage packaging.
Back up before installation or return
No drive should be the only copy of important files. Keep an independent backup before cloning, formatting, firmware work, troubleshooting or return. Western Digital states that data on a drive sent for warranty replacement is erased and not preserved; recovery must happen before the drive is returned.
Warranty depends on product and purchase country
Western Digital’s current warranty table says the term depends on the exact product family and the country where it was purchased. Verify the serial result, proof-of-purchase requirement, retail-kit versus component status, exclusions, return packaging and service address before relying on coverage from Malaysia. Do not assume that return freight or data recovery is included.
Firmware and enclosure cautions
Western Digital says most portable and desktop drives do not have a user firmware update and warns that attempting to update an enclosure or the drive inside can damage it. Use only current support guidance for the exact model and serial number. Do not install firmware from an unrelated capacity or family.
Protect the drive during forwarding
Storage products can be damaged by impact, movement, moisture or static. Use suitable retail protection plus a rigid outer parcel and enough cushioning to prevent movement.
